Gajah Tunggal is one of the largest tyre producers in Southeast Asia and ranks among the top twenty tire producers in the world.
The Company’s tyre manufacturing began in 1951 with a small bicycle tyre factory, and since then the Company has expanded its production capacity and diversified first into the manufacture of motorcycle tyres and tubes and then into the manufacture of passenger and commercial vehicle tyres.

The Company currently operates a total of 5 world class tyre plants for radial tyres, bias tyres and motorcycle tyres and tubes. The Gajah Tunggal’s state of the art tire manufacturing facilities are strategically located on a 250 hectare industrial complex in Tangerang, about 30 kilometers west of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Company has been reducing its cost by implementing vertical integration system with acquiring tyre cord, nylon filament and synthetic rubber manufacturer, GT Petrochem Industries and steel and bead wire manufacturer, Langgeng Bajapratama and aluminum alloy wheels manufacturer, Meshindo Alloy Wheel Corporation. As the result, Gajah Tunggal sources about 36% of its raw materials from its subsidiaries.

Gajah Tunggal has continually improved its product quality and in 1995, the Company received ISO 9002 international quality certification for its radial tire production quality control system. In 1997, Gajah Tunggal’s radial tyre plant obtained ISO 9001 certification for its quality design development and installation systems.

Gajah Tunggal has received quality certification from a growing number of purchaser countries, including the E-Mark from the European Community, the TUV CERT from Germany, the quality testing certification from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the BPS from the Philippines and a similar certification from the Government of Brasil.

In the end of 1999, Gajah Tunggal’s total consolidated work force reached 14,215 employees. About 6,801 of Gajah Tunggal’s employees worked in its tire facilities, while 7,414 people worked in its subsidiary companies.

The Company has always placed great emphasis on human resources development. Besides conducting regular in-house educational programs for employees, the Company also provides selected high school graduates with a fully sponsored three-year technical training program conducted at the Gajah Tunggal Polytechnic, a vocational training school located on the Gajah Tunggal industrial complex. Currently, the school accepts about 175 high school graduates a year and has had over 1,500 graduates.

Gajah Tunggal has developed a strong domestic and international distribution network. Gajah Tunggal’s tyres are marketed in over 100 countries and can be purchased in more than 5,000 retail outlet around the globe.
